AN ENHANCING ELIXIR EXPERIENCE - out today with Havok!!

Hey guys! I'm excited to share that I have a new story up on Havok's website today!

AN ENHANCING ELIXIR EXPERIENCE is about Charlotte, an Elixir Expert who decides to take a swig of Courage Cordial before her dream job interview at the circus. You'll have to read the rest to find out whether or not it works out for her. ;)

I'm super pumped about this one because it's my very first Wacky Wednesday story!! That means I've now had stories published in 4 out of the 5 Havok genres! (and you didn't hear it from me... but that number might be changing again soon *winkwink*)

If you want to read An Enhancing Elixir Experience, you can check it out HERE! As always, I'd love for you to leave a comment over on the Havok website if you enjoyed- it helps my chances of being included in the next anthology! And if you're not a member, don't worry if the comment section acts a little funky- it's been known to do that in the past, but your comment should still come up. Non-members can only read it for free today, though, so don't wait! ;)

Thank you guys so much for your support, and I hope you enjoy An Enhancing Elixir Experience! Lots of love! ♥

LOOK FOR THE FLARES // a post-Camp NaNo update

YOU GUYS.

I have very exciting news.

I FINISHED THE FIRST DRAFT OF LOOK FOR THE FLARES.

*excessive squealing and happy air-punching*

As you might remember, Look for the Flares was my 2021 NaNoWriMo novel. I wrote 50k and then took a break, intending to return to it and finish it soon. Long story short, I barely touched it until April. XD

So, when Camp NaNo rolled around, I knew I REALLY wanted to finish this book. For one, I wanted to get it done by Realm Makers. Not that I'm pitching it or anything, but I do have a critique appointment I'll be taking the first ten pages to, and I just really wanted to have the whole thing done by then. Also- and I'm not proud of this- my motivation levels absolutely TANK after NaNo events. So, I knew that if I didn't finish it in April, I'd likely struggle to keep my momentum and get the rest of it written.

Also... I just REALLY wanted to see this book done. Like... REALLY.

I set my word count goal for this April's Camp to 35k, but really the goal was just to finish my book. I think it was around 55/60k at the beginning of the month, and I usually finish my drafts at around 90k, so I just made a rough guess on the word count and figured I could adjust it later if I needed to. (spoiler alert: if I remembered correctly where I started, my word count for the month actually turned to be almost exactly 35k.)

Anyway... days and then weeks passed in April and I barely wrote anything. I became focused on writing short stories and neglected my novel. (this is a serious problem, y'all... I love writing flash fic and having things to submit places, but my novels are my first loves and I hate accidentally abandoning them.) BUT... if you've been around here at all during any NaNo month, you've learned that the way Emily rolls during NaNo is to procrastinate for the first two-thirds to three-fourths of the month, and then go into hyperdrive and write like a mad woman so I can meet my goal.

Is it healthy? Probably not. It works, though. XD

So, yeah, that's what happened this time around, too. Like I said, I barely touched this book the whole month. Then in the last third of the month I realized, oh hey, if I'm going to finish this book this month like I wanted to I need to actually write.

So, I went into that hyperdrive mode. I lost track of my daily word counts and didn't care anymore because I just wanted to finish the book. I ate lots of dark chocolate. I did lots of word sprints. I drank a surprisingly small amount of coffee. (suspicious...)

Thursday, April 28, was a day spent mostly writing. I knew that it would be the last day of the month I'd be able to make a lot of progress, so I just went all in and wrote, wrote, wrote. In that one day, I:

- Made myself cry for the first time with my writing. (It was a fantastic moment. I was writing a scene that I'd been looking forward to writing for ages (and actually had already written a rough version of it just to get it off my mind), and listening to an amazing, emotional song that has become the theme song of this book... and before I knew it I was tearing up at my kitchen table, silent-sobbing at my characters' situation. was it happy? was it sad? wouldn't you like to know...)

- Broke my record for the amount of words written in one day. (I wrote 11947 words that day, taking the crown from 2020 Covid-bound me. xD)

- Surpassed my highest word count for any of my WIPs. (Look for the Flares is currently at 96931 words, making it the longest thing I've written!)

- And finished my first draft!!

Honestly, I feel different this time around than I have after finishing other drafts. Of course, no matter what story I'm working on, I always miss the characters when I'm done, and long to jump back into the world. But there's something different about this one. Maybe it's the more emotional nature of this book. Maybe, deep down, this is my favorite child. But I feel much like I do after coming through a rewatch of Lord of the Rings, or reading a book that wrecked me. It's always on my mind, and when I dwell on it too much, I think, oh my goodness, I miss it and I love it and I want to live in it and I need to get back in and experience it as soon as possible.

Which brings me to my plans for this book, now that the first draft is done. It's now been a week since I finished it, and it's taken a significant amount of willpower not to just jump right back in and start on rewrites. But I knew I needed to step away for a bit, let my mind AND the book rest.

The weird thing is, I don't think I've ever really gone right into round two of a WIP after finishing the first draft. In the past, I've let the book sit for months, worked on other things, and then come back to it later (usually when it was time for another Camp NaNo XD). But this time... I just feel so ready to move forward. My writer soul is so on fire for this book right now and I don't want to lose it. I can't explain to you guys how much I love this story and want to share it with the world. I simply can't wait to go back through and start answering questions, fixing plot holes, doing some much-needed worldbuilding, adding layers, and just deepening this thing and making it better. Because let me tell you, there is a BIG mess waiting for me. And I'm so excited to attack it.

So, chances are my break from this book is pretty much over and you'll find me obsessing over it again shortly. Possibly today. XD If you would, say a prayer for me and this project, that the story and its purpose will come to life and God will meet me in the process. ♥

And that's the update! I sadly don't have any snippets for you today, because you do NOT want to experience any of this first-draft writing of mine from this past month. XD But you can bet I'll be sharing snippets and updates as I go back through this book, so get ready for that!

Thank you guys so much for sticking with me and encouraging me through this writing journey!! It means so much. Now, I want to know- how long do YOU wait after you finish a first draft before starting rewrites/whatever your second-draft process looks like?

THE MARCH MUCHNESS TAG // wherein I mostly ramble

Well, here we are- the last day of March Muchness and I'm just now answering the questions for the Wonderland tag. #oops

This month has felt like it lasted about two seconds. One second I was ready for it to come in, and now I'm sitting here blinking because I think it came in the wrong door and took a quick exit. And somehow over thirty-one days, I failed to do this post until the very. last. one. XD But it's fine. (*suddenly wonders if I should have waited until tomorrow and opened with "I'm late! I'm late! For a very important date!")

Anyway, that's enough rambling. Read on for my answers to the March Muchness tag!

List six impossible things you’d love to do – wild and crazy answers 100% welcome!

- Find a time machine and go back in time to visit some of my favorite moments

- Find a sugar-free version of every ice cream and coffee flavor

- Write a book perfectly the first time

- Visit Narnia

- Fly

- Conquer my TBR

I think these are all very sensible desires and I don't understand why they're not attainable.

What is a topic that grew curiouser and curiouser the more you studied/researched it?

I'm going to go broad here and say history. I've never been a huge history fan (unless we're talking American Girl books here), but over the past years- probably thanks to books and movies, let's be honest- I've become more and more intrigued by different time periods. And though I haven't done much research into them (outside of reading historical fiction XD), it's something I'd love to go deeper into eventually!

If you could invite three fictional characters to a tea party, who would they be?

THIS IS SO HARD. But I'll grab a few that I think would be fun...

- Mr. Tumnus. I mean, why WOULDN'T I want him there? He could bring sardines and toast (never had it but if Lucy liked it it must be good), and after tea he could play a tune for us. It would be a grand time.

- Princess Anna. I don't know why she popped into my head, but I just feel like she would be SO fun to have a tea party. And she could bring sandwiches.

- Steve Rogers. As my date.

Which Wonderland character do you feel you’re the most like?

I mean, I've got to say Alice. Because I, too, wander around aimlessly not knowing what's going on. xD

- If you could drink a magic potion that changed one thing about you, what would it be?

Um... motivation levels?? Like, seriously, give me a potion that turned all my procrastination into motivation and I'll be forever indebted to you. xD

How IS a raven like a writing desk?

The only thing that comes to my mind as an answer to this question is Edgar Allan Poe. Take that however you will. xD

If you were to make an enemy of Father Time, what time in the day would you choose to repeat?

I'm trying to come up with an answer to this question that doesn't involve more time in bed, and I'm failing. xD But seriously, those moments either just after you wake when you still have some time before you have to get up (aka, the hour in which I'm repeately hitting snooze), or the ones just before you fall asleep? When you're so comfortable and cozy? I'd love to repeat those. xD

If you fell down a rabbit hole, what would the land you pop into look like?

Hopefully Narnia, because honestly I'm not sure you could pay me to go to Wonderland. xD It's interesting but I'd be seriously creeped out if I went there. Maybe my rabbit hole will lead to the Freedom Fighters' headquarters from Sonic the Hedgehog. *shrug*

If you could have the body of one type of creature and the head of another (for example, the Mock Turtle has the body of a turtle and the head of a calf), what would that combination be and why?

I'm pretty sure I'd want the body of some kind of bird, maybe an eagle, because I desperately want to fly. As for the head? Uhh... I have no idea. Anything I imagine slapped on the body of an eagle just sounds ridiculously creepy and I don't like it. xD So, I'll cheat here and say another bird. How about the body of an eagle with the head of an owl? Then not only will I be super cool-looking, but I can watch my six and fly at the same time.

Have you read or written anything stylistically close to Alice in Wonderland? Tell us about it.

My mind is going blank and I can't come up with anything. I feel like at some point in my childhood I probably wrote something as random and wacky as Alice in Wonderland, though. xD

If you could either be as tall as a tree or as small as a mouse for an hour, which would you choose and what would you do?

I'd definitely want to be as small as a mouse. As a kid I probably would have chosen to hang out in my dollhouses, but those are in storage now so that's no good. Honestly, I'd probably just find a super cozy blanket and take a nap in it. xD

If you could give your younger or future self one piece of Very Good Advice, what would it be?

I think I would just encourage my younger self to breathe and grab the moments. I feel like this is something most of us don't learn to do until we're older, and then we have all these years behind us that we wish we would have appreciated more. There are definitely some times in the past I could have soaked in a little better. So, I would tell little Emily to look around, stop wishing for later, and just breathe in now.

And that's a wrap on March Muchness! I had so much fun putting this tag together with some blogger friends and answering the questions. Click HERE for the post where I linked to everyone else's blogs, because I really don't feel like doing that again. XD And here are those questions just in case you'd like to do the tag fashionably late:

- List six impossible things you’d love to do – wild and crazy answers 100% welcome!

 - What is a topic that grew curiouser and curiouser the more you studied/researched it?

 - If you could invite three fictional characters to a tea party, who would they be?

- Which Wonderland character do you feel you’re the most like?

- If you could drink a magic potion that changed one thing about you, what would it be?

- If you could give your younger or future self one piece of Very Good Advice, what would it be?

Go forth and answer! I hope you guys have had a lovely March/beginning of spring. I'm currently wearing a sweater and wondering why spring is always so confused. xD If you can point me to a geographical location where the seasons actually stay in their lines and give us the weather we're expecting, let me know so I can pack my bags and move there ASAP.

LOOK FOR THE FLARES: a writing update (ft. snippets and aesthetics)

don't mind me as I change my post banners design once again to find something I like

I was pretty quiet around here through NaNoWriMo, so I didn't share much about my current WIP, Look for the Flares. So, today I thought I'd give you all a bit of an update for this novel, as well as some fun stuff like aesthetics (of course), snippets (!!!!), and whatever else I feel like sharing. Enjoy!!

If you didn't already know, I won NaNoWriMo! *confetti* And yes, it was in my typical fashion of starting strong, dropping off partway through the month and getting thousands of words behind, and then writing like a mad woman the last few days of the month to catch up. But it works somehow. xD

I wrote a total of 50,024 words in Look for the Flares in November, ending with 51,136 words total (since I technically began writing the first scene of the book before NaNo). Overall, the writing of the book went pretty well, and I probably got less stuck than I have in most previous NaNos. I also wrote at a coffee shop for the very first time, twice actually, and was pretty productive there. 10/10 recommend coffee shop writing!! Definitely want to go back sometime soon.

Some moments from writing this book:

- injuring my MC three times... in one scene

- almost making myself cry with my writing (no actual tears were shed but this is the closest I've ever been)

- realizing I'm in love with my MC

- random future scenes and ideas coming to me and getting ridiculously excited (and a bit emotional) about them

I really, really love this story. I'm SO excited for it to be done. My goal after NaNo was to finish it by the end of December, which I quickly realized wasn't going to happen; then my goal was to finish it by the time school started, which, in light of school starting in like a week, isn't going to happen either. xD But I'm okay with it. I'm just excited to be diving back in and losing myself in this world again. I'm officially back at the stage of This Story Is All I Can Think About And I Desperately Miss My Characters While I'm At Work. (do I actually write when I come home from work? shhhh. it's rude to ask questions.)

Now, onto the good stuff: first, some characters aesthetics, and then SNIPPETS! (Telker doesn't have a full set of aesthetics because I don't really know enough about him yet. But I love him. And now I really want to work on his character because he deserves aesthetics.)

KALAR

silence // piles of unspent money // driven by a decades-old memory // perfect shot // always working // always searching

ADLEY

forced smiles // constant ache // haunted // loyal but it feels wrong // fight the voices that say you're worthless

TELKER

hugger // vibrant // always helping others, never himself // smile, it makes others smile

There are more characters, but I'll save those for another time!

And now onto some snippets!!

***

One of these days. One of these days he would go to just the right slave auction, buy just the right person, and his search would be over. Kalar and his brother would be together again.

He never even got a name.

***

The silent gun sent a bullet soaring through the forest, missing every limb and leaf and hitting its target soundly as if drawn there by a magnet. Kalar saw only the small eruption of blood before dropping his rifle and pressing a button on his tracker.

"Retrieve," he whispered.

A few moments later, his transport silently pulled up to the tree he was perched in, and Kalar leapt from branch to branch down to the vehicle. Just before he jumped down, the roof of the transport opened up, receiving him like an old friend.

"Target eliminated." Jendeen's computerized voice assured Kalar that his job here was done.

"Great. Thanks, lady." Kalar patted the dashboard and regained control of the transport, turning her around and speeding away from there.

"You're welcome, Kalar."

***

While she washed the sweat and grime away, Adley ran through her usual lines in her head. Thank you for the invitation. Curtsy. Yes, of course I'm honored to work at my husband's side. Admiring gaze at Kensen. No, I don't want more wine. Thank you. Keep in the rebellious smile at everyone around the table's shock at her amiable behavior toward the slaves serving them.

***

It took an uncomfortably long time for Mrs. Renham to quiet down and stop laughing. Her face was still red when she looked at Adley and tilted her head. "Now, I don't think I've ever asked you how you met your pretty wife."

Adley stiffened. Swallowed. Picked up her fork and scratched at her empty plate with the tines, wishing the food would arrive so she could have something to do. Mr. Renham frowned at her unmannerly behavior.

But Kensen was prepared for this question. He always was.

"Ah, my favorite story." And a story it was. He draped an arm over Adley's shoulders. "Adley was working in a bar, you see, one of those pretty bartenders. You get lucky and find one every now and then."

Mr. Renham nodded, and something about the look in his eyes made Adley think he would rather be sitting next to one of those bartenders than his own wife.

"The first time I saw her, I knew I had to have her. So, I snatched her up and carried her home and married her." Another charming wink. Adley grimaced. The story had just enough fantastical romance, just enough edginess, and just enough whimsy for his liking. It was believable while also obviously being an exaggeration, which usually prevented people from asking further.

At least the "I knew I had to have her" part was true.

***

A different slave arrived with their dessert. The conversation continued; nobody paid any attention to the young man whatsoever. Adley's blood boiled, and she wanted to smack some consideration into her husband.

The slave placed a place of some sort of confection before her. "Thank you," Adley said loudly.

A little too loudly, perhaps. The slave seemed startled and rather frightened, but Adley softened her words with a smile. He nodded and walked away.

But her interjection had done its job. Everyone else at the table was looking at her in surprise. Shock paled the Renhams’ faces, while Kensen mostly looked amused. He was used to these strange outbursts from her.

Adley gave them all a clueless smile and took a bite of her dessert.

If they won't be kind, I will. And I'll disturb their perfect little world to do it.

***

"Adley, what's bothering you?" Kensen tilted his head to look at her again. "You always get so sulky when you go with me on business. What's the issue?"

What was the issue? Surely he was not that stupid. Perhaps Adley had given his brain too much credit. "I didn't think I would have to tell you that slave pickups are not my favorite places to go." Her throat constricted, and she cleared it. Admitting that out loud to Kensen, paired with the memories she wished she could erase, suddenly made her feel very claustrophobic.

"Aw, baby." He let go of her hand to slide his up her arm and place his hand on the back of her neck in what she was sure he meant to be an affectionately protective motion. All it did was add to her closed-in feeling. "You know it's just the business. It's no big deal. And besides, you don't have to worry about that anymore." He turned to smile at her. "You're married to me, remember?" He let go of controls long enough to lean across the console and kiss her.

"Kensen!" The transport did not even swerve, but her brain told her they could be rolling down a cliff any moment.

"Relax." He squeezed the back of her neck, then put both hands back on the controls. "I've got you."

Adley winced. Did he remember that those were the first words he had ever said to her?

***

"No! No, please don't take him!"

The words stabbed Kalar in the heart, making him stiffen with unwelcome surprise. A pain shot through his temple, and he leaned on his hand and rubbed his head. The desperate pleas had been among his mother's final words. The last thing she said before her newborn baby was ripped from her arms.

Kalar closed his eyes, but it did not help to alleviate the pain. He saw his mother's terrified face, the tears spilling onto the floor. Heard the agonizing screams as her baby was taken from her.

"Kalar, run!"

Kalar started, sitting up straight and shaking his head to clear it. After twenty-nine years, he could still hear his mother's voice just as clearly as if it were happening now. And with her heartbroken cries, her tearstained face in his mind... he once again strengthened his resolve.

He owed it to her. He owed it to his father. And he owed it to his brother, to keep trying. Even if the now-grown Raynes child who never even received a name was nowhere in Myrandis... even if his breath had not lasted past the horrible day of his kidnapping... Kalar owed it to his entire family to keep searching.

***

"Incoming call. Incoming call. Alert. Incoming mission."

Kalar blinked until he was awake, blurriness trying to pull him back into the world of sleep. He pushed aside the dark and got out of bed, reaching for his communicator on the other side of the room.

"Here." He answered the call, rubbing his eyes in an attempt to make himself alert.

"Kalar. Please come into the headquarters as soon as you can so we can discuss a new assignment with you." Telker's voice was eager, his eyes on the screen bright.

"Okay..." Kalar raised an eyebrow at the screen. "Is there something you're not telling me?"

"Uh... not as much as you're not telling me, because I had no idea you looked that messed up at five in the morning." Kalar did not miss the way Telker skirted the question, but he merely gave a lopsided grin and nodded.

***

"You going down with me?" He got out of bed and pulled a shirt on, peering out the window in the direction of the slave house. He always did that, especially right after he got a new shipment. It was as if just looking at the building and knowing that there were all those people inside that he owned, made him proud.

"Yes." Adley sat up and hugged her knees to her chest. Of course she was going down with him. She did every morning, but she did not leave until after he was gone. She always wanted the hostages to see her last. It always sounded narcissistic to her when she thought about it that way, but if she was in their place, she certainly would not want the last face she saw every morning and night to be that of the grinning man who had just purchased them and thrown them all in cells.

Light. She just wanted them to be left with light. To know that they were not alone.

***

“What’s the matter?” she went on, mockingly. “Does it make you uncomfortable to talk about it? To talk about the fact that each of those people have different colored eyes, and they were all born in different cities, and they all like different kinds of food? You don’t like thinking about those things, do you, the things that add a little bit of humanity to them?” She felt like a wolf, snapping saliva at her victim. Poison dripped from her words. She felt a sickening mix of relief to finally say all this, and nausea at the fact that she was probably just making her life more miserable with every word she said.

***

As he approached the sound, he saw the woman sitting on the floor with her back to the wall, her face buried in her knees as she wept. Kalar walked toward her slowly. Who was she? Why was she sitting there?

She must have escaped a cell.

“Miss?” Kalar tried to get her attention gently, as she still had not seemed to notice him.

She jumped and sat up straight, slamming her palms flat into the floor. “Wh-who are you?” Her voice was hoarse, and her big brown eyes swam with tears.

Kalar took in a deep breath. He recognized pain when he saw it. “Did you escape?” he asked in a low voice, trying not to bring attention to her.

She bit her lip and nodded. “You could say that.” She lowered her face and closed her eyes, squeezing them shut and shedding tears all over the floor.

Kalar was itching to stop standing still and go find his brother, but something kept him drawn into this girl. He could not make himself leave her. Dropping to one knee in front of her, with an arm draped over the other knee, he said softly, “Do you need help?”

She lifted her red, blotchy face, and her gaze locked directly on his. An invisible thread kept them from looking away. Her eyes were wide, but she nodded ever so slightly, and Kalar saw something like wild, reckless hope in her eyes.

***

“What happened to your brother?” she asked softly.

He glanced over at her in surprise, frowning, then his face softened as he seemed to remember that the commander had mentioned it. “He…” Adley was surprised at how torn up he already seemed to be. His brother must not be dead—or at least not confirmed dead—or he would not be looking for him. But whatever had happened, it clearly bothered Kalar greatly. “He was kidnapped just after he was born. By slave traders.”

Adley’s heart thumped. It all came together in her head. Why this man had been in Kensen’s slave house, appearing to be looking for someone. He had lost his brother to slavery, and he wanted to find him.

Her heart broke for him. “So you’ve… been looking for him? All this time?”

He clenched his jaw and avoided her gaze. “Yes.”

She swallowed. She had not guessed that this man was as broken as she was. “I’m so sorry.”

He waved a hand dismissively, but she could see the tears glistening in his eyes. “We all have something.”

“No… we don’t all have something like that."

***

Kalar’s window cracked and then shattered. Shards of glass sprayed all over him, and Adley screamed. Kalar’s face stung; he reached up to touch his cheek, and when he pulled his hand away there was blood on it.

“Stay in here!” he yelled. A little excessive, probably, but under no circumstances did he want her to go outside into danger.

“Where are you going?” She was crying again now as Kalar opened the door. He wondered how she had any tears left.

“Just stay here!” Kalar grabbed his gun and jumped out of the transport, ignoring the stinging all over his face and left arm. Even his back was now beginning to hurt; somehow the glass had pierced right through his shirt.

A shadow fell over him when he stepped out onto the road. He heard an engine humming above him, and looked up to see a flying transport hovering a few yards behind. On the ground a few feet away from the driver’s side of his own transport was a hole where the hoverport must have just aimed a shot in warning.

And I think that's enough snippets. Probably more than enough. xD I usually have trouble finding snippets in my first drafts that are good/coherent enough to share. So, I may have gone a little overboard on this one. Ehehe. But this might be the cleanest first draft I've written, which I'm super happy about! I have no doubts that edits will still be challenging (it is me, after all), but I think this story is just overall in better shape than my others have been at this stage.

Also, I love this story. If I hadn't mentioned that already.

BUT ANYWAY. I hope you all enjoyed this writing update/peek into my WIP! I truly can't wait to share this story with the world someday. But that means finishing up this post and actually going to write, so I'll end it here. xD

What are you working on right now, writers? How's your January so far?

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT I'M FEELING '22

(let it be known that I was planning on using 22 as my theme song for this year before it became popular on TikTok)

Well, hey. Looks like I've been gone for a while. Since LAST YEAR, even. *insert everyone rolling their eyes at the predictable New Year's joke*

I never planned to be this sporadic at posting. I'm pretty sure I haven't posted regularly since I started college, which sometimes was necessary and sometimes was just the product of me being out of the habit of posting and forgetting about it until it was time to post.

I'm not going to pretend that my blogging schedule is going to be perfect in 2022. I'm sure it won't. xD BUT I do hope to get somewhat more regular with posting. I miss blogging, and I miss talking to you guys!! Most of my Internet time is spent on Instagram now, and while I love that community, there's just something more personal and intimate about this place, my own little corner where we can chat and fangirl and all the good stuff.

ANYWAY. I don't really have a roadmap for this post, so who knows where it'll go from here. xD Since I haven't posted a monthly review or any kind of life update in quite a while, I'll share a brief overview of some highlights from 2021... then a few things I'm looking forward to in 2022.

2021 MOMENTS

- Valentine's Day snow (aka the most snow we've gotten in years that lasted more than a day)

- Entering the Realm Awards and finding out The Hero of Parker City was a finalist

- Going to Realm Makers, meeting some of my favorite authors and writer friends, and having the best time of my life

- Meeting Jason Narvy from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Erin Cahill from Power Rangers Time Force, and Tony Dow and Jerry Mathers from Leave it to Beaver

- Having my fifth Havok story published

- Listening to the 10 minute version of All Too Well at eleven o'clock at night and thinking about how surreal it was to finally be hearing the whole thing

- Winning my fourth NaNoWriMo (and participating in my seventh)

- Spending Thanksgiving with my whole family after being separated last year because half of us had COVID (and being able to taste the food xD)

- Going to two Christmas concerts- the Collingsworth Family and the Ball Brothers (both amazing)

- And so many more. 2021 was a good year.

I mean, obviously it wasn't perfect. There were frustrations and tears. I doubted myself and my writing at times. But overall? The good moments were so good. The words I wrote meant so much to me. The time I spent with people was so precious.

And it makes me look forward to LIVING more in 2022.

So, now some things I'm looking forward to this year.

2022 MOMENTS... TO COME

- Finishing the first draft of Look for the Flares. (It simply didn't happen in 2021 and I'm okay with that.)

- Hopefully finishing the first draft of Twice Upon as well.

- A new Havok story coming out sometime in February!

- Realm Makers!! (I HOPE to be there in person, though it's not set in stone- but I'll definitely be there virtually no matter what!)

- Finishing college! (I'll graduate with my associates' degree in the fall! I don't plan on going any further right now so I'll be DONE! *much confetti*)

- New books from Nadine Brandes and Sara Ella!!

- Another year, another NaNoWriMo xD

- Spending more time pursuing God and His purpose and love for me.

- And... I don't know what else. That's what I'm looking forward to- finding out.

I'm excited for this year. I'm excited to see where God takes me, where He takes my writing, and what moments I'll be able to look back on. I'm excited to breathe deeper, work harder, and rest better. I'm excited to get new ideas and make new goals.

I'm currently taking a break from Instagram, and it's honestly been so nice. I'll hop on from time to time for cover reveals and the like, but I wanted to clear my head of noise and distractions this first month of the year so I can focus on other things. Like LIVING. Making goals. And most importantly, seeking God.

I've never really chosen a word for the new year. But the past few months, something has been going through my head that I haven't been able to forget. Two words, actually. And they're so powerful that I decided to make them my 2022 words.

RECKLESS SURRENDER.

On a small scale, that means abandoning any Bible-reading charts and plans and just reading and studying where I think God wants me to at the moment. (I can never keep up with those charts, anyway.) On a larger scale- who knows? I'm not sure what it means for me yet. But I think it's the best way I can live not only this year, but my whole life. Recklessly surrendering everything to God and trusting Him to work it out. Because He loves me wildly and he has a purpose for me.

It sounds risky, but that's the point. Reckless surrender to God is the safest place you can be.

I wish all you wonderful people the HAPPIEST of new years! I'm excited for what's to come this year, whatever that may be. Thank you all so much for coming along on this journey with me- even when posts are random and few and far between- and here's to 2022!!
